China Advances in Medical Science and Technological Innovation
In the last ten years, China's medical science and technology innovation has advanced, with several scientific and technological achievements emerging, according to officials from China's National Health Commission (NHC) at a press conference.
Since 2008, the health regulator has led and organized two major national science and technology projects, namely the development of new drugs and the prevention and control of infectious diseases. According to Liu Dengfeng, an official with NHC's Department of Health Science, Technology, and Education, 80 new drugs have been approved for marketing, which is 16 times the number before the two projects began. All the drugs are new and haven't been approved or marketed elsewhere in the world.
50 national clinical medical research centers have been formed in China, and they work in 20 fields that are relevant to prevalent diseases. In the area of biomedicine, 75 state-key laboratories have also been established. According to Liu, five national translational medicine institutions have been established to transform the findings of fundamental research into clinical practice.
